Anne Mojoko Musonge Memorial Trust rewards excellence

Barely three months after the launch of the Anne Mojoko Musonge Memorial Trust, AMMMT, 76 young girls from different schools in Fako Division have received scholarships from the trust, for the 2014/2015 academic year.

The scholarships were handed over to the beneficiaries at the Council Hallin Buea, on January 24, in the presence of Senator Peter Mafany Musonge.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Senator Musonge said that, after scrutiny by the scholarship selection Council and the approval of the board of trustees of AMMMT, out of 258 applications, 76 were selected.

He urged beneficiaries to work harder to reach the summit as the logo of the trust is “Reaching for the Summit”.

The former Prime Minister added that the amount of money given to each student depends on the level of education or programme they are pursuing and could be renewable, depending on the academic performance and conduct of the beneficiaries.

The Head of the Board of Trustees also urged parents to use the financial assistance for the purpose for which it is intended.

Talking to the press, Musonge said, to ensure that the money is used for the purpose for which it is intended, academic performances of beneficiaries would be checked from time to time.

“If the director of a school purportedly tells us that a child has been sent home because they have no books, then, we’ll know that the resources we gave have not been properly used.

This is the first thing we are doing to ensure the education of the girl child but, with time, we would partner with bookshops where we could buy books and give them directly to children rather than cash presentation as in this case,” the Senator averred.

The Divisional Officer, DO, of Buea, Paul WokamKouam, who presided over the ceremony, said, for the beneficiaries to be successful, a conducive learning environment is required.

“I have set up a Commission to fight against nuisance in towns, I believe this action will have the necessary support of the parents,” he stated.

A beneficiary, Doreen Ekume Enjema, a Lower Sixth student of GHS Buea Town said; “I am very happy for this scholarship from AMMMT. The money would be used to purchase my school needs and I will work harder in order to be selected next time.”

Helen Likowo Atra, a Form Two student of GHS Bokova said she feels inspired to work harder.

The sum of FCFA 60,000 was given to each deserving niversity students. Technical and vocational training students and those of Upper and Lower Sixth received FCFA 40,000 each. Students from Forms 1-5 received FCFA 25,000 each, while Primary Six pupils had FCFA 20,000 each.

The AMMMT was launched on October 25, 2014, with the objective of providing grants, scholarships, fellowship and other forms of financial assistance, for the education of the needy and deserving girl child of Fako Division between the ages of 12 and 22.
