5 Killed in truck crash

A ghastly accident is reported to have occurred at Tiko. It is suspected that, the driver of the truck experienced a break failure leading to a crash that left at least five people dead.

Crushed and mutilated body parts and wailing relatives at the site stunned passersby.

This morning, inhabitants of Tiko woke up to witness this accident, after a truck raced down the Likomba slope, killing at least five people.

Involved in this casualty were cars with passengers. A flattened motorbike was spotted at the scene. Eyewitnesses and officials said the truck killed four people in a taxi parked by the roadside before slamming into a private car killing its lone female passenger.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated by security officials who said they suspected the truck lost its brakes, which triggered the “free roll” downhill.

Its driver, name unknown escaped after the truck came to a halt under an electric pole. He later turned himself in at the police station.

“There was blood everywhere,” said an eyewitness Brandon Ayuk, who runs a shop not far from the area. “I could not look at the horrible scene.”

Likomba, at a crossing of the Limbe-Douala highway records deadly accidents often due to overspending, the lack of sidewalks and protection for roadside residents.

Authorities built speed breaks along the section of the road but that has not stopped motorists from overspeeding on this road, said Ayuk.

Cameroon roads have been noted to be one of the deadliest in the world, accounting for nearly 300 deaths monthly, according to official estimates.
