Press Release : Joint Commemoration of the 2014 World Press Freedom Day

The Presidents of the Cameroon Union of Journalists (CUJ), Commonwealth Journalists Association, (CJA)-Cameroon, Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) and Anglophone Newspaper Publishers’ Association-(CANPA) hereby inform newsmen and women nationwide, as well as the national and international communities that there will be a joint ceremony organized by these bodies to commemorate the World Press Freedom Day at the Buea Mountain Hotel on May 3, 2014.

The initiative is intended to enable the men and women of the media to review the situation of the press in Cameroon and chart a path that leads to the revision and amendment of some provisions of the 1990 press laws considered obnoxious, obsolete and contrary to good conscience. At the same time, it will be an opportunity to examine techniques that could facilitate the ongoing advocacy for the enactment of freedom of access to information act in Cameroon.

The presidents of these leading associations are hereby inviting national dignitaries, the country’s intelligentsia and the diplomatic community in Cameroon to join forces with us in efforts to make our country a press freedom haven.

The last preparatory meeting towards the said event has been convened in Buea on the 11th of April, 2014 at the Head Office of The Post Newspaper. It will bring together representatives of the said associations.

Signed:

Charles Ndi Chia HRH Chief Foanyi Nkemayang Paul Patricia Efange Oben John Mbah Akuroh President, CUJ President, CJA- Cameroon President, CAMASEJ President, CANPA
