UPC calls for national dialogue

As the party celebrated its 68th anniversary yesterday, party officials are envisaging reorganizing grassroots structures nationwide.

The Union of the People of Cameroon (UPC) party has called for national dialogue in Cameroon so as to preserve peace and cohesion.

The call was made in Yaounde last Saturday, during a press conference by the Executive Committee of the party in prelude to the celebration of the 68th anniversary of the creation of the oldest Cameroonian party.

In a declaration jointly signed by the President of the Executive Committee Bureau, Victor Onana and the Secretary General, Prof. Basile Louka, the party states that Cameroon needs national political reconciliation to enable the country to be governed by patriotic values.

The party also holds the view that a consensus devolution and exercise of power is necessary for the preservation of peace and stability cherished by Cameroonians.

The difficult living conditions, threats to Cameroon’s sovereignty, and the clamour by different political clans to take over power, exposes the country to risks of explosion, disorder and anarchy.

According to Victor Onana, election results are usually contested and could lead to social strife.

“We are calling for national dialogue because we want that all forthcoming elections should be conducted differently from the past ones in a democratic way based on generally- accepted principles and Electoral Code”, he stated.

The UPC advocates the revision of the Constitution because Cameroon needs change. Dialogue, the UPC wants is not exclusive, but should concern all political parties, said Basile Louka.

The UPC, it emerged from the press conference, stands for the promotion of patriotic values and the revival of Cameroon politics.

Political parties, Onana stated, must be at the service of the nation.

The party is envisaging reorganising its grassroots structures nationwide.
