The UPC calls for a "partial modus vivendi” against Boko Haram

The Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC) has called on all political powers and the civil society to a ‘partial modus vivendi’ towards the security of the country.

The appeal was made the day after a third suicide attack in Maroua (Far North), attributed to the Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram, which killed more than 20 on Saturday night.

In a solemn appeal, the panel considers the security of the country as a priority at the moment and that it should be handled well by those governing the state.

For UP, Cameroonian political institutions should take appropriate and effective measures to involve and make the people interested in civic duty and safety, regardless of the pyramidal inversion.

Also sub-prefects, considered closer to the people, should promote the creation of vigilance and intelligence committees in their districts. Traditional leaders should also play their part since they are considered "an essential link in this war structure".

Moreover, while it preaches traceability of people’s movements, especially foreigners, UPC suggested that the unemployed youth (10-18 years), main target of terrorists due poverty, are subject to a particular attention without stigmatization of any kind.

Regarding the recent suicide attack in Maroua, it was perpetrated at a place called Green Bridge, a popular area in the town where dozens of people gather to drink beer and a traditional drink called ‘bili-bili’ at night. The incident which took place at around 7:30 p.m was the second suffered by the city in four days and recorded a total of 60 injured.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the bomb was carried by a teenager brought to the place by a man on a motorcycle who went back at top speed.

Cameroon entirely lives in a psychosis of terrorist attacks since the twin suicide attack which occurred on July 12 in Fotokol (13 dead and 32 injured).

The Defense Ministry has designed a communication channel to help citizens recognize a suspected terrorist and created an emergency number (1500) for any alerts.

Regarding alerts, the police arrested two white men who were allegedly accused of carrying explosives at Brickyard, a district in Yaoundé and home to a large Muslim community.

On Sunday, sources disclosed that the Presidency of the Republic had received a video from Boko Haram threatening to attack all non-Muslims living in the town of some 2 million people.
