2018: Who will be the sole opposition candidate?

According to a survey from Reuters, the Cameroonian opposition is already preparing its single candidate for presidential of 2018.

To this end, Columbus, an organization of civil society, together with the political parties of the Opposition, has established a platform.

The name of this platform is the 'La Puce' or 'chip'. Its role is to enable Cameroonian opposition to choose a single candidate who will carry their voices to challenge Paul Biya in the next presidential elections.

This organization justifies its approach to subject opposition primary election by the will of the latter "to ensure a minimum of legitimacy to the future head of state, with an effective and absolute majority, since, because of the absence of a runoff, compounded by several other shortcomings of the electoral code, the current President of the Republic is elected with less than five percent of the votes," said William Edgar Onana, coordinator of Columbus. For the organization, this approach also has the advantage of ensuring the credibility of the electoral process.

"The special feature of this approach is that contrary to what was practiced in the past, where the candidate was appointed by arbitrary criteria, the only candidate to be appointed following a transparent election. The name of the single candidate out of the ballot box, "said William Edgar Ako, coordinator of Columbus.

February 28, Columbus already announced a press conference to present the "Charter of primary" to the media and the public. During this press conference, each candidate will have to sign it. It is the symbol of commitment to abide by all the principles and terms of the primary. The side of the conference will also serve to the organizers, to present the "High Authority".

The "High Authority" will be composed of 10 members. Its mission will be to coordinate primary, "in full transparency. Therefore, its members will be selected on the criteria of political neutrality, of good character, expertise and intellectual comfort."
