With the departure of MTN as chief sponsor, the Cameroon club football championship will no longer be called MTN Elite 1.
Even though Camtel is replacing MTN, the caretaker committee of the football federation has opted to return to the older name: League 1.
The competition that was initially planned to begin on 18 February 2013 will now begin on 1 February 2014 with 19 teams. As a result, four and not three teams will drop to the second division at the end of the year.
Other changes imposed by the odd number of teams include one club resting every match day. Next year, 18 teams will stay in the League 1 championship.
