Best Stars beat Continental to emerge Southwest champs

Best Stars Academy of Limbe were crowned Southwest National Interpools represententative after beating Continental FC of Buea 2-1 at the Limbe Centenary Stadium on Sunday, November 8, 2015.

The winner for Best Stars was scored by skipper Kevin Nji at the 75th minute to give Best Stars Academy their second Southwest Mini Interpools tournament consecutive title and the third in the club’s history. The first goal was scored by Fabrice Ofon in the first half.

However, Continental FC of Buea who failed to concertize their goal scoring opportunities in the game, gave Best Stars and their supporters a scare during additional time of play when they converted a penalty to make it 2-1. They however lacked time to get a comeback as the match ended shortly after they reduced tally.

After representing the region in 2012 and 2014, Best Stars will be looking forward to correcting their errors of the past at the National Interpools tournament.

Speaking after the encounter, the coach of three-time Southwest champions Saturin Njofack was optimistic that they will bring back a League Two ticket.

“Our performances in the past have not been bad. However, this time, with the experience we have, we are going to represent the region and qualify for League Two.

“I know we still have a lot to do in order for us to achieve our objective. Also, our ambition this year was not to qualify for the National Interpools Tournament, but since the opportunity came, we are going to make good use of it,” Njofack promised.

On his part, Coach Gaston Boule of Continental FC was not satisfied with the performance of his players and also congratulated Best Stars for their victory. He promises to see to it that the errors of this year are corrected next year.

“Continental is an academy with very young players. I believe that we have an objective with the project and next year we are going to see that we represent the region,” Coach Boule promised

Speaking after the finals, Southwest FECAFOOT President Mbella Moki was happy with the level of football in the region. “I am very happy with the level of our football, organization and participation. The turnout shows that the population and teams support all the reforms that are going on in FECAFOOT,” Mbella enthused.

Some players were given individual distinctions: Kevin Nji of Best Stars (Man of the match), Fabrice Ofon of Best Stars (highest goal scorer with 4 goals) and Derrick Eyongi of Continental FC (best player of the tournament).
