Battle for MTN Elite One Championship Leadership Intensifies

It will be a distant duel between Union and Coton Sport during the 23rd day of play of the MTN Elite One championship this weekend as the tussle for the championship title intensifies as the season draws to an end. Barely four days to go to the end of the championship, Union has comfortable lead with 48 points, five points ahead of their closest challenger, Coton Sport of Garoua with 43 points.

Hence, while Union will be seeking to extend their leadership margin when they clash next Sunday against Astres at the Reunification Stadium in Douala, Coton Sport will be travelling to Bafang to claim the three points put to play against local side, Unisport in the hope of a false step from Union which will enable them reduce the gap separating them.

With 11 points separating the runner-up from the third-place team, the battle for the championship title has been reduced to a Union-Coton Sport duel. Hence Panthere, Yosa, New Stars and Unisport will have to cut short their ambition to vie for the third position synonymous of a spot in the African Confederations Cup next year. Panthere stands the best chance of clinching a continental berth as they temporarily occupy the third position with 36 points barely one point ahead of Yong Sports Academy in the 4th position with 35 points.

New Stars and Unisport on 34 points each in the 5th and 6th positions respectively, are not left out of the contention for places in continental competitions next year as they are barely two points away from Panthere and one point behind Yosa. Hence the Panthere-Njalla Quan; Canon-Yosa and the New Stars-Renaissance encounters will equally be of interest to football fans.
