Udoh Uche wins Yaounde Golf Tournament again

The 6th edition of the Yaounde International Golf Tournament ended at the golf club in Yaounde on Saturday with Udoh Uche Andrew, a Nigerian, emerging champion for the second consecutive time.

The defending champion retained his title by outsmarting his opponent on the last day of the competition. However, Cameroonians swooped the second, third, fourth and fifth positions.

Nlarep Issa Armand, Ebela Desiré, Tata Lesley and Ottou Philippe came second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

According to the winner of the tournament, he had an edge over the others because he is to take part in the London open and has been preparing for the event.

The Yaounde tournament therefore, served as preparation for him. The Cameroonian athletes, on the other hand, complained of lack of enough preparation, competitions and support from the sports authorities of the country.

In the amateur category, however, Eyenga Christian and Emtcheu Elise both Cameroonians emerged champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.

Presiding over the closing ceremony, the Inspector of Pedagogy at the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, Dohbobga Macias, urged Cameroonian athletes to work hard so as to win the next edition of the tournament.

He said government supports all active sports federations and urged officials of the golf federation to promote the discipline in all the nooks and crannies of the nation.

The President of the National Olympic Committee, Colonel Kalkaba Malboum promised assistance to the best Cameroonian golfers to prepare well for the next edition of the tournament.

He said golf was henceforth an Olympic sports discipline, reason why the projected Olympic village in Obala will also comprise an 18-hole golf course.

The president of the golf federation, Assiga Ahanda Yves Martin announced that the next edition of the tournament will take place from May 8 to 14, 2016 and the cash prize will be increased from FCFA 6.5 million to 10 million.
