Hard Femme: Adding an edge to your style

Not to be mistaken with the typical femme, the “hard femme” describes herself as “queer”, is political, looks more feminine than masculine, and if prompted, can kick some serious ass. She doesn’t need to “wear the pants” in a relationship- the hard femme rules with a dress. She not only despises the gender binary, she works to dismantle it. (Urban Dictionary)

While I disagree with the “typical femme” portion of the above definition, since I believe that “femme” is an inherently radical identity in itself, this definition is certainly on the mark. Hard-femme describes a style of femininity that infuses with some typical masculine style.

So how can you get this look?

Suit Jackets: Most commonly, as seen in the above photos, adding a fitted jacket to your outfit can add an edge to pretty much any outfit. Also, suit jackets, being a classically masculine piece, adds that traditional masculinity to your style while the feminine fit will help accentuate your figure.

Hats: Snapbacks can become a staple to your hard femme look. In addition, wide-brims can also add a softer masculine edge to your look.

Black Platform Boots: Currently a rather large trend in hard femme style are black platform boots. These boots don’t only add a punk edge to any outfit, they also add great height to your figure, depending on how tall the platforms are.

Dramatic Winged Eyeliner: For those who love their makeup routine, adding a dramatic wing to your eyeliner routine is an excellent way to put that additional 'unf' to your hard femme look.

Either way, the best accessory to your hard femme look is your attitude. Hard femme is an extension of your personality. Walk with confidence, own your look, and you’ll pull it off effortlessly.
