Insulted and beaten, a young student from Cameroon of racist aggression in Aouina, north of the Tunisian capital on the evening of Sunday, November 1 .

Lionel, the student assaulted, was attacked by four Tunisians. His assailants beat him severely and disfigured his face without stealing anything.

Immediately after this, the Association of Cameroonian Students and Trainees in Tunisia (AESCT) alerted Cameroonians and sub-Saharan students living in Tunisia to be cautious. She denounced the resurgence of violence and racism against people of color.

"Dear Cameroonians, the hour is grave. Be careful. Thank you for agreeing to take precautions such as not walking alone in low traffic areas and especially at night and avoid crowds as much as possible," the association said.

Reactions

A group of seven associations issued a statement on Wednesday to denounce this aggression. The seven associations signatories are the Committee for the Respect of Freedoms and Human Rights in Tunisia (CRLDHT), the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH), the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES ), the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT), the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (TANF), Vigilance for Democracy and civic State (Vdec) and 23-10 Association. They recall that this racist act is not the first of its kind.

This class requires "the pursuit of any person guilty of racist abuse, verbal or physical" and once again calls on the Assembly of Representatives of the People in passing a law that clearly penalizes racism and ensure the protection of victims of discrimination and racism. This should be according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all international conventions banning racism.
