Night Watch Killed in Buea

Alex Toko, a guard with the NESON Group Inc. was killed in the night of 11 breaking 12 January in the Buea Post and Telecommunications (P&T) Credit Union premises where he was a night watch. The incident occurred opposite the Regional Delegation of National Security in the South West Regional capital, Buea.

According to the General Manager of the P&T Credit Union, Henry Nana Njanko, thieves broke open the institution's doors that fateful night. Alerted by somebody who was witnessing the attack, Henry Nana Njanko said he called the Police around 1:00 a.m. The latter arrived the scene not long after, went round the building and discovered that the night vigil had been killed.

"The inventory is still being done to establish documentation and cash that may not be there.

For now, we know that FCFA 600.000 was stolen," he explained to Cameroon Tribune on Monday, January 13. He further disclosed that another safe was forced open but that they were yet to establish its contents because it was supposed to contain money brought in the previous evening by our mobile collectors and that the amount could only be ascertained the next day. "This is actually the first incident affecting our Union whereby the doors are broken," regretted Henry Nana Njanko.

The Credit Union exists since 1971 and moved to its sumptuous building some four years ago opposite the Buea Central Police Station. Like other finance institutions, it employs vigils from the private security firms. On his part, Godlove Afaha, Manager of the NESON Group Inc., told Cameroon Tribune that Alex, 28, was still in the fourth month of his probation with them. He said Alex, as he is popularly known, had effectively taken up service that fateful evening and penned down some reports in their records.

"I strongly believe he was terribly surprised because by their training, the vigils are supposed to run away if they notice any strange thing and immediately inform the manager by the service mobile phone. The manager in turn alerts the Police for rescue," he explained. But on the fateful day, they found Alex's phone SIM Card on the floor of the Credit Union. "We also noticed some blood on the floor but Alex's corpse, kept in a nearby uncompleted building, was not wounded. The assailants had tied him firmly and stuffed his mouth," he said. Investigations have been opened into the matter.
