Landry Sanjo USC Warriors face revamp

THE University of San Carlos Warriors will be undergoing a major retooling as six of the players who saw action in the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season won’t be playing this year.

One of the players who will not be coming back for the 2015 season is the team skipper Nico Magat, who will be graduating from college this March.

Magat, who made a huge contribution to the Warriors’ campaign in the 2014 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Elite 8 tournament, is not returning even if he still has one more playing year left.

“There will be a major retooling for the Warriors. I think there will be six players who will not be returning, one of them is Nico Magat. Some players are coming back and we have players who were not in the line-up because of academic deficiencies. One of them is (Venjie) Trozo,” USC chief backer and Bogo City mayor Celestino Martinez Jr. told Sun.Star Cebu.

Martinez also denied rumors regarding the resignation of Junthy Valenzuela from his post.

“Junthy is still the coach of the Warriors. They already had discussed (the terms) with Father (Adriano) Ocariza. In fact Junthy is calling a meeting with the coaching staff on Monday (today),” Martinez said.

One of the concerns of the Warriors for now is to find a legitimate big man who can help the team.

“Trozo is a big man but we still need more big men, someone reliable in the middle. We now have scouts trying to recruit top notch players. And also our concern now is to determine who will we keep (between the two African imports), would it be Shooster Olago or Espoir Toyambi? Since next season, only one import can play,” Martinez said.

Defending champions Southwestern University is also changing its import since Landry Sanjo is reportedly having academic problems.

SWU will be playing with new import Mupungu Boko, who is currently working hard to improve his game.
