SA showed character-Williams

Bafana Bafana Bafana Bafana

The retired striker felt that Bafana could have beaten the Indomitable Lions in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier Group M clash on Saturday.

Despite taking the lead twice against Cameroon on Saturday during an Afcon qualifying game, South Africa could only manage a 2-2 draw at the Stade Limbe.

However, legendary Bafana Bafana striker Mark Williams has informed Goal that the team showed character to draw against the current Group M leaders.

"You know it is always tough playing against Cameroon whether away or at home. The team showed character and it's just unfortunate they drew after playing very well," Williams told Goal.

"They could have won the game if you look at the way they played. They still have the chance as they are playing them again on Tuesday," he said.

With Bafana placed third on the Group M standings five points behind group leaders Cameroon, Williams remains optimistic about South Africa's chances of advancing to the 2017 Afcon finals in Gabon.

"They can do it at home and keep the chances of qualifying alive. They are a good team and they showed great character on Saturday," Williams concluded.

Bafana will host the Indomitable Lions at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday. Kick-off is at 19h00.
