Information coming through to AfricanFootball.com from London is that Liverpol is looking at signing Cameroon and Schalke 04 defender Joel Matip.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have expressed their intentions in the defender and are ready to discuss a pre-contract agreement with him.

Although the 24-year-old was a target for Newcastle United last summer, the German Bundesliga outfit wanted £10million for the Cameroon international.

The report suggests that Jurgen Klopp’s side are unlikely to spend in January, but will continue to assess potential deals in preparation for the summer.

Matip is tall and can also play in defensive midfield with his contract running out in the summer and he is free to talk to foreign clubs from next month.

The Anfield-based outfit are also continuing to monitor Matip's highly coveted teammate Leroy Sane, the son of Senegalese international, Souleymane.

Meanwhile, the Premier League giants are yet to agree on a deal for Marko Grujic from Red Star Belgrade who is believed to have attracted coach Klopp, however, no fee agreement is in place yet.
