Oyongo called up for Cameroon's squad for qualifiers

Ambroise Oyongo has kept his place in Cameroon's squad for its 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Head coach Volker Finke named Oyongo to his 23-man roster for the Indomitable Lions' concluding matches in Group D of ACN qualifying: against the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 15 in Yaounde (Cameroon), and a trip to Ivory Coast on November 19.

Cameroon currently leads the group with 10 points after four games played. DR Congo and Ivory Coast each have six points and a chance of qualifying (the top two teams in each group advance automatically to the 16-team Cup finals). Oyongo has started three of the four matches his national team has played in this round of qualifying - all wins. He was not selected for Cameroon's 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone.

The future of the tournament is currently in doubt. The executive of the Confederation of African Football is meeting to discuss Morocco's request to postpone the competition due to concerns about the ongoing Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to be held in Morocco from January 17 to February 8, 2015. The host nation has requested public health concerns be prioritized over the logistical difficulties of rescheduling a major international soccer tournament. CAF would prefer to keep the ACN where it is on the calendar, even if that means moving the event to a different country.

But those are serious considerations completely beyond the control of a young soccer player. For now, all Oyongo knows is he will be heading to Cameroon shortly after he learns whether he still has a club season to come back to: RBNY's Eastern Conference semifinal against D.C. United will precedes the November FIFA window for international matches.
