Cameroon face DR Congo in Group C top of table clash

Indomitable Lions Indomitable Lions

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon take on DR Congo’s Les Leopards in the 2016 African Nations Championships (CHAN) Group B top of table clash on Monday at Huye stadium in Huye.

Cameroon are second placed in the table with four points having won their first game 1-0 against Angola before settling for a goalless draw against Ethiopia.

The West Africans are two points behind DR Congo, who are already through to the last eight after winning their first two games against Angola 4-2 and Ethiopia 3-0.

Ntdoungou Mpile Martin’s side will go into today’s game knowing that only a win can take them to the top of Group B table and therefore a quarterfinal clash against Ivory Coast, while a draw would see them finish in second in their group and effectively book a date with Rwanda – the leaders in Group A – in the next round.

“We must beat DR Congo who are in superb form; it will be an uphill task and hope that the other game (Angola Vs Ethiopia) ends in a draw or an Angola win,” Mpile said.

Both teams have so far met nine times in all competitions with Cameroon holding a slight edge of three wins against two for DR Congo while the other four games have been in a draw.

Meanwhile, Palancas Negras of Angola, who have already been eliminated from the tournament having lost their first two games (1-0 and 4-2 to Cameroon and DR Congo, respectively), will face Ethiopia at Amahoro National Stadium.
Both matches will take place simultaneously.

While Angola have only national pride to play for, Ethiopia will be looking to get an emphatic victory over the Southern Africans and hope that DR Congo beat Cameroon, if they are to reach the last eight.

Ethiopia and Angola have played against each other once before – in an international friendly in August 2014, which Angola won 1-0.

Rwanda have recently played against all its three potential quarterfinal opponents – they beat Ethiopia 1-0 in the opening match of the regional Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup staged in Ethiopia in November 2015; before drawing 1-1 against Cameroon and then beating DR Congo 2-1 in friendly games in Rubavu, just a few days to the ongoing CHAN tournament.
