Africa’s richest man hopes to buy Arsenal

Aliko Dangote has made a fortune in the sugar, flour and oil industries, and now he is looking to use some of those earnings to make a small purchase.

The 58-year-old Nigerian worth $15.7 billion was interested in buying stakes in the club five years ago, but talks fell through.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Dangote says he still wishes to buy Arsenal, and has a plan to do so in his future.

“I still hope, one day at the right price, that I’ll buy the team. I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won’t want to resist. I know my strategy.”

With the club valued at $1.49 billion, it seems as if Dangote has a plan to one day make an offer well above their valuation, making it nearly impossible not to sell from a business standpoint.

American Stan Kroenke currently owns 67% of Arsenal Football Club, though no comments have been made to suggest he plans on selling the club. Kroenke also owns the St. Louis Rams of the NFL, the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL, and Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids.

Currently, Dangote said he is too focused on other business ventures to make a serious bid for Arsenal. If Dangote were to eventually buy his way into the Premier League, he would become the league’s first African owner.
