Overhauling of transport sector envisaged in 2016

The ministry has proposed budget of FCFA 8.3 billion in 2016 for the development and rehabilitation of transport infrastructure.
It was a confident Minister of Transport, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o, who left the Ngom Jua Committee Hall on the night of Sunday November 29, 2015, where he defended before members of the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly an amount of FCFA 8,372,000,000 as the draft budget of the ministry in 2016.

Prominent among the priorities outlined in his plan of action, is the restructuring of the national airliner, CAMAIR-Co and the compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) standards of the Douala and Yaounde airports in view of their certification. This, according to Mr. Mebe Ngo’o, is to make Cameroon a hub in Central Africa as far as air navigation is concerned. Some secondary airports are also due renovation.
In the railway sub-sector, the ministry intends to finalise feasibility studies on the extension of the Cameroonian railway line from Ngaoundere to Ndjamena in Chad as well as carry out renovation works of railway lines of Douala-Kumba and Panga-Ngaoundere.

As far as maritime transport is concerned, Minister Mebe Ngo’o who was assisted by the representative of the Vice Prime Minister, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assemblies, Jules Doret Ndongo, and the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Finance, Elung Paul Che, also outlined activities geared at revamping the Tiko and Bota ports, amongst others.

Studies, he added, would be conducted in view of developing an urban transport policy in Cameroon. Apart from improving the security and safety of the various modes of transport, the ministry also envisages the development and rehabilitation of the national meteorological network, amongst other actions.
