Road Safety: Gov't deploys three new mobile speed radars

Robert Nkili, Minister of Transport Robert Nkili, Minister of Transport

Henceforth, mobile highway traffic radars will be used to reduce road accidents in the country. The Minister of Transport, Robert Nkili, launched the three new radars in Nomayos on the Yaounde-Douala highway and Nkol-Nguem on the Yaounde-Bafoussam highway on Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

Minister Robert Nkili said his presence on the field in the company of his aides and policemen was to demonstrate the importance of the mobile radars and ensure that his instructions were respected. Robert Nkili noted that the Douala-Yaounde highway remains a major preoccupation following the recent spate of accidents. He reiterated the need to strengthen sensitisation on major highways in collaboration with policemen and gendarmes.

In Nomayos and Nkol-Nguem, the Minister watched the use of the radars on over-speeding vehicles whose drivers were each fined FCFA 25,000. The mobile radars have computers that enable the road safety team to look out for over-speeding vehicles.

They record such information which is then communicated by phone to road safety teams located some distance ahead to flag down and fine the erring motorists. The Ministry of Transport plans to acquire more radars in the days ahead for deployment in all the regions.
