Cameroon welcomes Regional English Language Officer

U.S. Embassy Yaoundé welcomed Regional English Language Officer (RELO) Scott Chiverton for a series of programs from February 16 through to 22, 2015.

Mr. Chiverton is based outside precisely in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, where he oversees English teaching programs in 16 African countries, including Cameroon.

During his visit, he has conducted several programs with youth in Yaoundé and Kribi.

Most recently, he opened the 2015 Spelling Bee competition in Yaoundé, where he underlined the importance of fun activities in enhancing English language acquisition. Read his full remarks at http://yaounde.usembassy.gov/lnsa_021915.html.

Welcoming Mr. Chiverton, Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory D. Thome thanked him for his visit and excellent commitment to sponsor English teaching programs in Cameroon, which provide youth with the tools to learn English and build their self-confidence to compete in today’s global economy.

Highlighting the American people’s support, Mr. Chiverton told teachers, parents, and students at the Spelling Bee: “To contribute in improving the standards of English in Cameroon, the U.S. Embassy has developed programs targeting both teachers and students. For teachers, we have a broad range of professional development tools and activities.

To keep Cameroonian teachers abreast with new development in the field of English language teaching methodology, the Embassy regularly organizes professional enhancement seminars throughout the country. Parents and guests, your presence here today also speaks to your interest in the education of your children.

Educating Cameroonian children starts right at home. Quoting President Obama ‘we have to tell children that education is not a passive activity, you have to be actively engaged in it.’”
