CAS lifts ban on JS Kabylie

The Algerian side Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie (JSK) will be eligible to participate in CAF competitions after their ban was lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Wednesday.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided Wednesday to annul the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decision concerning the suspension of Algerian side Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie (JSK) from participating in CAF club competitions during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

This decision was taken in the wake of the killing of JSK Cameroonian player Albert Ebosse by a missile thrown from the stands after his side’s 2-1 loss to USM Alger in a league game.

The 24-year-old Cameroon forward was slain when a hail of missiles rained down from the stands as players left the pitch after a league match at Kabylie’s home ground last August.

The Executive Committee of CAF on 9th October 2014 imposed the sanction on the Algerian side, who appealed immediately to the CAS.

“The appeal of JSK is upheld and the decision of the Executive Committee of CAF is annulled with immediate effect,” read a statement on the CAS official website Wednesday.

“The CAS found that the disciplinary proceedings conducted by the CAF authorities did not comply with the rules of the CAF; the challenged decision was taken without the representatives of the club JSK having been heard or even informed of the procedure in progress.”
