Urban Development: Douala sets the pace for 2015

The construction project of a second bridge over the Wouri River is now in full gear.

The concern is not only the bridge but ensuring a number of outlets to decongest the Deido Rond Point area.

This explains why the Douala City Council embarked on the demolition in the Deido area.

A number of houses and shops have been scrapped off around the Sandaga market since 5th January 2015.

Curious onlookers’ watch the huge satom engines (French Development Construction Company) bring down the structures which other recuperate whatever could be used from the rubble.

Curiously enough, no one complains. Many city dwellers in the area agree that they had been asked to move out since 2013.

Makolo Benjamin Balise one of the victims whose eight-room apartment was demolished after living in this area for 32 years, embraced the move with delight, asserting that it was for the good of the younger generation.

The administrative authorities in Douala have saluted the collaboration and sense of patriotism expressed by the population.

As construction begins soon, even the doubting Thomases now agreed that the economic revival promised by President Paul Biya is just a matter of time.
