U.S. Embassy Organizes First Annual Douala Spelling Bee Competition

The U.S. Embassy, in partnership with the Cameroon English Language and Literature Teachers Association (CAMELTA), will hold its first Annual Douala Spelling Bee competition on March 12, 2014 at the Lycée Technique de Koumassi. The competition will begin at 1:00 p.m.

This is the first time the U.S. Embassy-sponsored Spelling Bee competition will be held outside of Yaounde. This inaugural edition of the Douala Spelling Bee will bring together 35 contestants from seven Douala secondary schools. Participants in this year's competition will come from: the Ivan Bilingual College Douala; the Government Bilingual High School Deido; the Presbyterian Secondary School Douala; Faith Bilingual Complex, Douala; Sacred Heart College, Douala; All Saint Bilingual College Douala; and the American School Douala.

The purpose of the Spelling Bee is to increase students' English-language vocabulary, improve their writing skills, and deepen their understanding of words structure and origin. Additionally, the competition contributes to enhancing students' development of poise and communication under pressure.

The U.S Embassy introduced the first Spelling Bee competition in Cameroon in 2011 in Yaounde. The event was very well received by schools, parents, and students.
