Low cost housing, sanitary conditions cause for concern

The wear and tear of the government owned low-cost houses in Yaounde clearly indicate neglect and lack of maintenance.

Most of these houses are occupied by government functionaries and their families who have been left to cope with the precarious sanitary conditions.

Most of the structures have been left to depreciate over the years. Worse still, the environment itself is becoming unlivable owing to the stench that is oozing from the dilapidated and overflowing septic tanks which sometimes run over streets and alleys.

The situation exposes residents to high risk of air and water borne disease; yet no one seems to care.

Despite a repair and maintenance programme that was implemented some years back, most of the structures of the low-cost houses of the Cameroon Real Estate Corporation Sic are presently in ruins begging for an urgent redress.

In the absence of better alternatives the occupants are waiting on the goodwill of the SIC authorities to respect their engagements.

The public – private sector partnership in the construction of low cost housing in the country shall hopefully usher in competition and force those responsible to improve service quality for the betterment of occupants.
