SCNC activist released after two months detention

After over two months of detention at the Kumba main prison awaiting trial, Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC) activist, Esambi Mathias has been released. Esambi Mathias, who was arrested on January 9 by four plain clothes policeman accused of planning to convene on illegal SCNC meeting was released on bail on Thursday, March 21, 2014.

Speaking to this reporter a day after his release, Esambi, a mechanic by profession did not deny he is an SCNC activist but denied he was planning to convene an illegal meeting at the time of his arrest.

SCNC activists, believe that Esambi could have been arrested for fear that he could organize an anti-Biya protest, especially given that at the time of his arrest, rumours of Biya’s imminent visit to Buea for the 50th Anniversary of the celebration of Cameroon’s reunification was afoot.

Whatever the cause of his arrest, Esambi who was bailed by Djokam Vincent, further explained that he was not maltreated while in detention, even though he had to appear several times in court. He further told this reporter that Djokam bailed him on grounds that he would appear in court, whenever he is wanted.

If previous experience concerning the arrest of SCNC activists is anything to go by, then Esambi would never again appear in court. Meantime, Esambi refused to indicate whether he would still be active in SCNC activities. SCNC activists say Esambi’s release is a victory for the movement.
