Yaoundé and Douala now on Digital Terrestrial Television

Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the Cameroonian Minister of communication (Mincom) and government spokesman, announced that the country has moved to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) on July 14.

In a press release on Tuesday, Mincom reported that households in Cameroon's two main cities, Yaoundé and Douala, will experience the DTT free of charge.
“The other parts of the country will be covered gradually", stated Bakary who also serves as the vice-president of the Cam - DTV.

The channels offered includes eight local four foreign channels. The local channels are Crtv, Canal 2 international, Equinoxe TV, STV, Vision 4, DBS, LTM, Camnews 24. The 4 foreign channels include France 24, Tiji, BBC World, TV5 Monde Africa.

“For the first phase of migration, 1,000 households were selected in Yaoundé and Douala as well as their surrounding cities by Cam - DTV, the body responsible for the migration in Cameroon. At the end of this phase, set-up boxes will go on sale at affordable prices,” said Issa Tchiroma.

Within a period of 3 months, Bamenda (North-West), Garoua (North) and their surrounding towns will also switch to DTT as promised by the Government. Digital broadcasting is made effective from Crtv, the public operator chosen by the authorities.

Highly criticized on the file relating to the management of the migration of the analogy to digital set for June 17 by the International Union of telecommunications (ITU), the Government, by way of justification, had stated its concern for clearance of the equipment at the port of Douala.
