West Region Dominates Chinese Ambassador's Cup

The Kungfu-Wushu competition took place at the Yaounde Sports complex on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

After the table tennis federation, the Cameroon Kungfu-Wushu and Assimilated Disciplines federation, FECAKUWUDA, has followed suite in organising a competition in honour of the Chinese Ambassador to Cameroon, Wo Ruidi.

In the maiden edition of the competition organised on Saturday January 25th, Bomba Belinga won the trophy in the 85kg men's category, Ondoa Dimitri won in the 60kg category and Nforsang Roland lifted the trophy in the 55kg category. For the women, Irvana Sylvie won in the 75kg category, Guiliwal Ango won in the 60 kg category. However, the competition was dominated by athletes from the West Region which is logical since they participated with the highest number of athlete and earned a special trophy for that.

The competition brought together over 200 participants drawn from nine of the ten regions of Cameroon and was characterised by fights in eight weight categories comprising Sando combats and Taolo kata. The event was spiced by the presentation of the Lion and Dragon dances by some members of the Chinese community in Cameroon.

Speaking on the occasion, the president of the Cameroon kungfu-wushu federation, Dr. Ella Jean Bosco, who is a black belt 4th dan holder, hailed the assistance of the Chinese embassy in organising the event saying it would contribute to reinforce Sino-Cameroon relations. He said after eight years of lethargy, his federation is awake and wants to make kungfu a popular sport in Cameroon.

He said the sport was easy to practise and leads to good physical and mental health of the practitioners. He announced that the federation will hold a general assembly in March and after that embark on a nationwide tour to promote the sport discipline in Cameroon. The Confucius Institute charged with fostering Sino-Cameroon relation based at IRIC in the University of Yaounde II, received a special prize for their contribution towards China-Cameroon friendship.
