We will soon have a Law School - Bar President

Francis Sama Asanga, President of the Cameroon Bar Association has said draft legal instruments for the awaited Cameroon Law School are ready and in the hands of government.

Sama gave the hint on January 9, at the swearing in ceremony of some 152 advocates-in-training at the Fako High Court, Buea.

“I want to tell you that we will soon have the law school in Cameroon created. In fact, a meeting to draw up the draft legal instruments creating the law school took place today between the Bar, the Ministry of Justice and other stakeholders. I was represented at the meeting by my representative for the Centre Region,” Sama said.

Shortly after the Ordinary General Assembly of the Bar of Saturday, June 28, 2014 organized for the first time in Buea, the Bar President had announced that plans to create a law school were in advanced stage.

“The project of the law school is in place and I must admit that late Barrister Bonu was the representative of the Bar in this big process. His demise will cause some little stalemate, but we are working tooth and nail with the University of Buea and our supervisory ministry to see that that takes place in the nearest future.”

The Bar President who may be seeking another mandate when his term ends at the close of this January added that Cameroon with a population of well over 20 million people needs more than 10,000 advocates.

He lauded the swearing in of 1453 advocates-in-training nationwide, saying that the new advocates add to the 1899 already in practice to render better services to Cameroonians.

While congratulating the 152 advocates-in-training sworn in Buea, Barrister Sama advised them to stick to the ethics of practice.

“It takes time to grow in the profession. Follow the instructions of the law, the submissions of the learned state counsel and the advice from the bench,” Sama advised.

The swearing in of the advocates-in-training in Buea was attended by senior members of the Bar Association, among them, the President of the General Assembly of the Bar, Barrister Dr. Emmanuel Tang.

The President of the Fako High Court, Justice Charles Menyoli chaired the occasion with Buea State Counsel, Maureen MORFAW Chibili.
