US-Cameroon relations celebrated at America’s 239th Independence Day

The Embassy of the United States of American was full to capacity with invitees of all shades of the Cameroonian society including Cabinet Ministers, Senators, Parliamentarians and Traditional rulers as well as members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Yaounde.

They turned out for celebrations marking the 239th anniversary of the Independence Day of the United States of America celebrated in Yaounde. The presentation of colours by a detachment of the U. S. Marine Corps to the Ambassador of the United States of America to Cameroon, H. E. Michael Stephen Hoza, in the company of Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations set the tone for the event.

The University of Buea choir, then chanted the anthems of both countries beginning with the cradle of our fathers, followed by the Star Spangled Banner of the USA.

H. E. Michael Stephen Hoza used the occasion to retrace the long struggle by Americans to equal rights and liberties. Photo exhibits of some historic Americans who dedicated their lives to bring dignity and full rights for all was on display.

The US diplomat noted that his country’s foreign policy has been to promote the respect of fundamental human rights. “I see the same goals and aspirations in the eyes and hearts of the people of Cameroon and we are honoured to make this journey together.” He added.

The Ambassador of the United States of America to Cameroon used the occasion to reiterate his country’s commitment to assist Cameroon in the fight against the terrorist group Boko Haram.

Both countries are engaged in high-level military cooperation including training and intelligence sharing which is essential in winning the war against terrorism. Jazz performances by the US Department of State Cultural envoy, Bobby Ricketts an international saxophonist and jazz musician gave a rhythmic note to the event.
