Tourism sector loses over CFA100M due to insurgencies

According to sources at the Ministry of tourism and recreation, Cameroons tourism sector has lost more than 100 million CFA francs during the last six months because of the insecurity in the far north region of the country.

This fall of revenue could greatly jeopardise Cameroons tourism since this part of the country generates high revenue as far as tourism is concerned.

With the kidnapping of Western nationals and regular attacks from the Nigerian Islamic sect Boko Haram, European and American countries which produces the bulk of tourists, have multiplied warnings to their nationals and significantly reduced their movements in the direction of the North of the country.

Consequence, many sites are now idle, forcing the sector to implement "technical leave", and cut down on the number of employees.

According to a manager of a hotel complex in Maroua, "all rooms are almost empty, the restaurant and bar are not operational. It is for this reason that we decided to give a technical momentarily leave, for some of our collaborators”
