The Justice Minister, Laurent Esso, in a decree number 249 / MINJUSTICE has created three new prisons in Cameroon.

According to Cameroon Tribune in its July 13 2015 publication, the three new prisons are situated in Douala and Limbe.

In the Wouri department, Douala-Ngoma Central Prison at PK 19 as well as a main Prison in Bonaberi was established. Earlier this month, the government had launched the construction work of the ultramodern prison in Douala.

The establishment of these two reformatories is essentially to decongest the central prison in Douala (New Bell), which currently has more than 4,000 inmates with a capacity of 600 stalls.

The city of Limbe in the South West region was also equipped with a main prison. This prison will also help decongest the Buea central prison built in 1907 by the German colonial administration. It is also the main prison in the southwestern region in Cameroon.
