In Cameroon, every smoker spends on average the sum of 4691 Cfa francs per month to buy cigarettes, which corresponds to 8.9 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) monthly per capita, says the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), survey conducted by the national statistical Institute (INS) with the assistance of the Cameroonian Ministry of public health and the World Health Organization.
According to the same source, the phenomenon of smoking in Cameroon is more accentuated in people in the age group 25-44 years, where the monthly expense for the purchase of cigarettes exceeds 5000 Cfa francs per smoker; While the 15-24 age group spend about 4123 Cfa francs every month for smoking.
Faced with this rise in smoking, with its devastating effects on health, the anti-smoking Committee of Cameroon suggested in recent years to the government, an upward revision of the taxation of the product to minimize consumption, especially among young people who are more likely to smoke.
