The United States denounces "tribalism State" of Cameroon

Among the 286 ethnic groups that exist in Cameroon, there are strong allegations of discrimination on some of them.

According to the information published by a US newspaper on Monday, July 13, 2015, the Bulu/ Beti ethnic group, which the head of state is part of, is the most favored and its members occupy the most important positions of the State. The positions are the defence, security, finance, just to mention a few.

According to the report by the U.S. Bureau of democracy and the rights of man, discrimination is suffered by the Baka Pygmies and the Boro. These ethnic groups are considered to be inferior to others. The report also referred to the enslavement of the people of Kirdi by the Peuhls in the North.

For the newspaper, these minority issues are often presented by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). But tribalism of State remains a taboo. In Cameroon, based on official appointments, results of the different positions were viewed under the tribal and ethnic prism.

The recent controversy was on the results of the International Relations Institute (Iric) exams which proved the claim. The regional balance rule leads to the impression that not all the candidates have the same chances when they write an exam.

The newspaper also noted that in the administration, some executives believe that their career was led by the fact of their membership in the ‘host country’; a phrase used to describe the Central and South regions.
