Telcos offer subscribers diverse gifts during World Cup

As football icons from 32 countries continue to tussle for the coveted trophy of the 20th World Cup Competition in Brazil and the honour it brings to them and countries, telephone operators in Cameroon are equally multiplying strategies to harvest quick returns through diverse offers.

They are increasingly devising ways, either through comparatively cheaper call rates, gadgets acquisition and other gains, to ‘make life better’ for the customers and attain maximum sales. Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) for instance, has set base at some busy spots in Yaounde and Douala from where potential customers are given the opportunity to watch World Cup matches on giant screens erected for the purpose with much to take home through a programme, ‘Toli World Cup.’

Another offer is the possibility for subscribers to pay in FCFA 500 per week to benefit from FCFA 40 per minute calls through all networks. Through the programme in all ‘Chop et Yamo’ eateries in Yaounde and Douala, participants can win multimedia CTphones, Toli T-shirts and surf freely on Wifi on the site. Prior to the beginning of the competition in Brazil, MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon had already begun offering desiring customers opportunities to win free flights to Brazil. Through ‘GetReady4TheWorld’ for example, MTN subscribers could win round tickets to Brazil by refilling MTN Internet airtime or purchasing its modems. Buyers of either an MTN Internet bundle or a modem stand the chance of winning prizes like trips to Brazil, plasma screen TVs as well as smartphones and airtime.

Meanwhile, within the framework of the pre-tournament games, sources from Orange Cameroon say the outfit selected subscribers of all walks of life, some whom have been sponsored to watch the Cameroon-Mexico game, some are en route for the Cameroon-Croatia game and others programmed to leave in the days ahead for the Cameroon-Brazil showdown in the last Group A games.

Orange Cameroon, our source said, took care of all who travelled and will be travelling (flight and accommodation). Added to this is the contribution of its officials during the live match commentaries on CRTV television besides what officials say is free roaming on Orange network in Brazil.
