Standards development: Cameroon to speed up the process

Cameroon has set up some measures to speed up its standard development by appointing new members to work on making it better.

Thus members of the steering committee of the l’Agence des normes et de la qualité (Anor) program have officially been set up by the Deputy Director General of the organization, Chantal Endeley on Friday in Yaoundé.

With only 1708 standards, Cameroon is ranked bottom of a list dominated by Tunisia, Ghana, Kenya with 16,035, 7000 and 5000 standards respectively according to a survey.

Given the importance of this tool when it comes to competitiveness, poverty portfolio of our Cameroon is a real obstacle to the pursuit of growth and structural as well as infrastructural transformation of the economy.

Aware of this challenge, the Agence des normes et de la qualité (Anor) has resolved to catch up with other countries and to significantly boost economic growth. Hence, the creation of Programme national d’élaboration des normes au Cameroun (Pnen).

The Pnem is to construct and disseminate a pertinent document defining the national program for development of standards over a period of three years. This will be done taking into account the needs of different stakeholders, the socio-economic priorities and priorities.

"The program will therefore contribute to the rapid development of standardization in Cameroon, particularly through the rapid increase in the number of standards. This is with a goal to catch up with other countries and significantly stimulate economic growth”, said Chantal Endeley.

Despite the emotion that arose this time, the Deputy Director General of Anor drew the attention of the members of the steering committee on the importance of this mission that calls for seriousness and rigor.

Made up mostly of Directors, civil society and economic operators, the mandate of Pnem will extend over three years and will be renewed on an annual basis. To begin, members of the committee want to look at the cement and food sectors.
