Soldier killed in an ambush in Far North

A Cameroonian soldier has been killed and another injured in a suspected ambush by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram on Saturday.

The attack which occurred at Achigachia in the extreme North Region of Cameroon, near the Nigerian border, is said to be the same spot where a dozen soldiers lost their lives in a similar attack in December as informed by an unnamed source on Sunday morning.

According to the undisclosed security official, the Cameroonian soldiers who were aboard a vehicle were attacked by the unknown number of Nigerian Islamic sect.

"Our men who were on patrol yesterday were ambushed by a small group of Boko Haram fighters around 16:00 (local, 15:00 GMT) at Achigachia. The assailants opened fire, killing one of our men and wounding another. The surviving comrades tried to fight back but the attackers escaped”, reported the security official who preferred to remain anonymous to Xinhua.

He further revealed that there were a number of key jihadists around Lake Chad. Despite the deployment of Cameroonian and Chadian forces, members of the terrorist group formed a coalition in Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger to cross weak borders and attack via bikes or on foot in Cameroon through small incursions.

For over two months, the Cameroon was no longer subject to massive attacks like the December 28, 2015 attack where ten soldiers including a captain were killed in Achigachia and Boko Haram fighters lifting their flag before their return to Nigeria.
