Severe flooding in Maroua, hundreds homeless

Maroua flooded Maroua flooded

"Serious flooding occurred on the night of Friday breaking Saturday, in the departments of Mayo-Tsanaga and Diamaré, causing hundreds of families without shelter, houses destroyed, submerged plants, roads blocked, grain reserves and onions washed away, schools and cemeteries flooded," says Hamidou Hamadou, the Mayor of Maroua 1, the regional capital of the Far North.

The floods came just days before the scheduled start of school in Cameroon, September 7, 2015. The city of Maroua, already suffering the abuses of the terrorist sect Boko Haram, also suffered the wrath of nature.

This is not the first time a torrential rain has caused severe flooding in the region. In 2013 and 2014, heavy rains led to the destruction of the dam of Maga, many plantations and left hundreds homeless.
