RFI (Hausa) correspondent arrested in Maroua

Arrest Arrest

The Hausa correspondent of Radio France Internationale (RFI), Ahmed Baba, was arrested in Maroua and has remained in custody at the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) of the Far North since Thursday, July 30, 2015.

According to his colleagues in the Far North, the GMI elements arrested the journalist during the security meeting presided by the Governor of the region at the Cercle Municipal, Maroua.

"After the security meeting, we went out to have some conversations with the Governor and while we were having the interview, we saw Ahmed Baba aboard the police vehicle," said a journalist from Maroua.

According to one of his relatives who visited him at the police station, Ahmed was accused of being in the possession of a Cameroonian National Identity Card while he was a Nigerian national.

For now, both the Radio France Internationale and the National Union of Journalists of Cameroon (SNJC) have not reacted after the arrest of the correspondent.

Like his compatriots, who were illegally in Cameroon and were turned back last week, it is believed that Ahmed could be repatriated to Nigeria in the coming days.
