Promoting archives: Cameroon takes the challenge

Cameroon has joined the international community to commemorate the 9th edition of the International Archives Day on 25th June 2015.

This year’s celebration was organised under the theme, “Building a relationship with archives; making archives user-friendly.”

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Ama Tutu Muna launched commemorative activities at the National Archives building in Yaoundé.

During the event, she threw light on Government’s efforts in preserving and protecting national archives. She exhorted Cameroonians to give value to archives since past records are of utmost importance.

Highpoints of the day included an exhibition of images depicting the history of Cameroon especially those of the Cameroonian football squad from the 1950’s till date and a roundtable conference.

The Minister of Arts and Culture said this year’s commemoration is to encourage better management of archives and raise Cameroonians’ awareness on their importance.

Celebratory activities will end on Saturday 27th June 2015 with an open-door visit to the National Archives in Yaoundé.

The International Archives Day was instituted in 2007 and Cameroon is celebrating it for the third time. Through this day, the International Council of Archives seeks to promote the conservation and preservation of archives worldwide.
