Plan Cameroon comes to the aid of refugees

A $ 660 million F project has just been launched in Bertoua to improve the nutritional status of refugees and the vulnerable in host communities.

The socio-political crisis in the Central African Republic resulted in a high rate of internally displaced persons in the eastern region. Nigerians have also found asylum in the region of the far North and according to studies conducted by UNICEF and UNHCR, more than 20% of these displaced populations suffer from malnutrition.

Faced with this situation, Plan Cameroon, in collaboration with its partners, Plan Canada and DFATD (Department of Foreign Affairs, trade and development of Canada) has recently implemented a nutrition and household economic security project.

This project also reflects on the vulnerable host populations and otherwise addressing water and sanitation problems. It was officially launched 26 May by Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, the Governor of the eastern region with Bell’Aube Houitano, national Director of plan Cameroon by his side.

This was the formal phase of the launch of the project because in reality, it runs from April 1, 2015 and will end March 31, 2016.

It spreads on four health districts of the East which hosts Central African refugees, namely, Kette, Ndelele, Batouri, Bertero-Oya, and three health districts of the far North sheltering Nigerian refugees, including Minawao camp, Mokolo and Mora.

Malnourished children of less than five years, pregnant or breastfeeding women, health workers and vulnerable host communities are the targets of this project.

Several activities are planned during this period; among other things, the realization of small gardens to improve the dietary diversity, distribution of AQUATAB kits, the promotion of good hygiene practices, the training of professionals in the management integrated acute malnutrition.
