PNDP donates 10 beds and 40 mattresses to New Bell prison

The National Participatory Development Program (PNDP) presented Thursday, May 28, 2015, a donation of bedding facilities to New Bell prison in Douala.

This gesture aims to improve the conditions of prisoners in detention.

Engonga Mintsang, Commissioner of the prison located in the heart of the city of Douala indicated that the gift of PNDP is welcome, as it will help them decongest the cells of minors where inmates number 18 and 20. This is peculiar to cells that host victims of a fire incident that had some inmates relocated to the place since September 12, 2012.

Since this incident, there has been the problem of overcrowding in the prisons, the New Bell prison has just acquired a building R + 1 at an estimated 55 million CFAF.

It has a capacity of 960 places and is composed of several cells. "PNDP Littoral staff decided to make a donation to the prison to help the situation. They assured that the gesture will continue in other regions and in the area of health", Herman Olivier Bekack, Coordinator of Pndp in the Littoral region asserted.

The National program for participative development (PNDP) is one of the operational framework of the poverty reduction strategy implemented by the Cameroonian Government, with the help of several technical and financial partners.

It is designed to empower rural communities and local authorities for the achievement of socio-economic or environmental investments.

It aims to promote sustainable development, focusing on the Organization of beneficiaries, their capacity, their involvement in the identification of their priority needs, the search for solutions, planning and implementing concrete actions for the social and economic development of their communities.

In March 2015, the East Branch offered to Commons having in their midst the Baka communities a donation of 17 compounds computer kits each with a complete desktop computer with operating system integrated, together with the connecting plugs, two ink cartridges, inverter, Microsoft Office Professional 2007 software, antivirus software over the operating licence.
