The Organisation des Droits de l’Homme et de la Protection du Citoyen (ODHPC) has called on authorities for the urgent elaboration of a development plan for the protection against flood at a time of heavy rainfall in the economic metropolis Douala according to PPCI.

The city of Douala, as stated by the ODHPC will go through the most difficult times in the months and years to come due to the climate change phenomenon marked by heavy rainfall, flood, landslides, erosion and storms.

According to sources, the incident that occurred in Doula on Friday was the worst floods to have hit the city in 50 years, forcing many inhabitants to seek refuge on buildings and the extent of the damage has not yet been established.

The PPCI stated that this alignment should enable the public access public utilities with ease which applies to the building permits and must be attached to the local plans for urban planning of the municipalities concerned.

In all of the four high risked areas including the places not affected by flood, new construction should adhere to constructive and sustainable provisions involving the social actors.

The sandy town by the Wouri River was also plagued with anarchic urbanization, which shows the lack of policy planning and sanitation regularly disparaged by specialized agencies.
