North region governor decries the inactivity of some workers

John Abate Edi'i has called on workers union to unite and have a real impact on working conditions within companies.

The Boulevard of Independence located between the Plateau district and the district Adjia Roumdé-Garoua hosted nearly five thousand workers from all over the northern region, to attend the celebration of the 129th edition of the Workers party.

It is obvious that this is the only time when workers meet to denounce their working conditions and above all their rights through union groupings in which they campaign.

Moreover, the regional head of the Union of Free Trade Unions of Cameroon (USLC) Njidda Bouba took the opportunity to reveal the problems that employees face in the northern region. Including unfair dismissal which some are victims, for reporting on the evils that undermine a company for which they work and the revision of the Labour Code, the texts are not implemented until today.

Also the head of the USLC acknowledged the progress experienced by the sector in Cameroon through the work including the revaluation of the guaranteed minimum wage (SMIG). However, he believes that a further increase would relieve workers, as 36,000 CFA francs is not enough to feed a family in Cameroon. A statement that got rounds of applause from workers from 156 companies that make up the city of Garoua.

When the workers expected from the northern governor cooperation in his speech, Jean Abate Edi'i rather decried the phenomena encountered in public services, para-public and private.

Phenomena which are a real handicap for the development not only of the northern region, but also the whole of Cameroon. The governor also made an observation on the behavior of trade unionism in the northern region.

"We want a responsible trade unionism that does not manifest itself only with the approach of the working party, but must be present among workers not only to recognize an ability to defend their rights, but also to give the state means to improve decent work," concluded the Governor.

This launched the debate in the public opinion of the city of Garoua after the celebration of the 129th of the working party. "This is a real fact in Garoua, when you go into an office, you will see that it has become a meeting place to tell the stories of the day, it would have to change," argues Walezai Desire, employed in a company instead.
