Nigeria, CMR cross-border security cooperation enhanced

"Insurgencies and the challenges of cross-border management" was the theme of the workshop which brought together Cameroonian and Nigerian officials, in the Federal State of southeastern Nigeria, Akwa-Ibom.

In a context where cross-border issues (trace, demarcation, security and trade) between the two countries are at the heart of the fight against the terrorist movement issues of Boko Haram, "such seat could only better the situation", acknowledged Abba Moro, the Nigerian Minister of the Interior.

In the final communiqué of the two days of work (16-17 January), the two parties decided to set up bilateral committees at the level of local authorities, who will meet frequently.

The Cameroonian national holiday (May 20) will witness the participation of senior officials of the Federated States of Nigeria (Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Cross River and Akwa-Ibom) in five Cameroonian border regions (far North, North, Adamawa, North-West and South-West). The two parties undertaken to strengthen understanding and cooperation between border communities, for a harmonious use of common resources.

It is in this perspective to understand the involvement to the foundations of Akwa-Ibom's that five traditional chiefs of the five Cameroonian regions accompanied the Minister René Emmanuel Sadi, in addition to three Governors Abakar Ahamat (Adamawa), Adolphe Lele Lafrique (North-West) and Bernard Okalia Bilaï (southwest) and 20 experts from various ministries.

In two weeks, Yaoundé will host a similar meeting devoted much more to the safety aspects of this cross-border cooperation between Cameroon and Nigeria.
