MPs request Paul Biya to accept dual citizenship

According to them, the law prohibiting dual citizenship is "unfair and detrimental to the development" of Cameroon.

10 members signed December 2, 2014 a letter calling MPs to reform Act No. 68-LF-3, of 11 June 1968 establishing the Nationality Code. It was addressed to the president of the Republic Paul Biya through the Secretary general of the Presidency of the Republic.

These elected representatives, majority from the CPDM (7 MPs) wrote that the law of June 11, 1968, which prohibits dual citizenship is "unjust and harmful act to the development of Cameroon. They explained that "the children of many high dignitaries of the Republic (diplomats, judges, members of Parliament, members of the Government) have dual nationality" because they were born in foreign countries. "How can we force them to choose between the two nationalities?", ask the members.

They argued that "dual citizenship is claimed by originating elites of our countries who shine particularly in academic, economic, scientific, artistic, sporting disciplines abroad". They asked the President of the Republic Paul Biya "to revise Act No. 68-LF-3 of 11 June 1968 in order to enshrine dual citizenship.
