Mékin Dam to be operational in 2016; Chinese contractors announce

Mekin hydroelectric dam, under construction in the South region, will be operational in April 2016, according to the China National Electric Engineering Corporation (CNEEC) who disclosed that the work is already 70 percent complete.

After two reports about a misunderstanding between the main constructor (CNEEC) and its subcontractor, which slowed down the work in 2014 and in May 2015, April 2016 has been set aside for the delivery of this work.

The Director-general of Hydro-Mekin, the owner of the project, Frédéric Biya Motto states that "the first megawatts will be available at the end of this year", after the first rise in water of this energy infrastructure, it is intended to power a part of the southern region through a plant's at a walking distance 15 Megawatts (MW) and a 33 km energy evacuation line.

Hydro-Mekin, the public company to build and manage this dam, is the second company in the country after Energy Cameroon (ENEO) and it is managed by British Actis investment fund to make available prerogatives of production, transport, distribution, and marketing of electric energy in Cameroon.
