With financial support from the World Bank Group, the Korea Development Institute will launch in eight African countries, a programme for building local skills in applied sciences, engineering and technology, revealed official sources at the World Bank.

These countries to benefit from the project are Cameroon, DRC, Ethiopia, the Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Senegal and Tanzania.

This tripartite collaboration (Korea, World Bank and African States) capable of helping African countries to succeed in their socio-economic transformation, resumed under the partnership for the development of skills in applied sciences, engineering and technology (PASET), a joint initiative of the World Bank and African countries launched in 2013.

According to its initiators, PASET is designed to develop the full range of skills and do secondary research through technical and superior vocational education. And the choice of the Republic of Korea to share its experience with African countries is not a matter of chance, argued t the World Bank.

According to the Bretton Woods institution, "in just 50 years, Korea has been able to move from the status of countries dependent on aid to donor country thanks to the fast economic growth: per capita income increased from $ 67 (about 33 500 CFA francs) in 1950 to 22 670 dollars (about 11.3 million FCfa) early in 2012. And this growth was made possible possible due to hefty investment in education and training.”

At the same time, it was noted, many African countries are still “looking for better understanding of certain economic sectors severely penalized by the current lack of investment in technical skills”.

"The unique experience of Korea, a country devastated by war and now an undisputed economic champion, can serve as an example for other countries about to begin their transformation and to the World Bank, we are pleased to facilitate these exchanges," said Haleh Bridi, Director of program and regional partnerships of the World Bank Group in the African region.
