A fighter belonging to the Nigerian Islamist group, Boko Haram, was killed in an attack against a Cameroonian army post in the region of the far North on Tuesday, a security official in the region told AFP.

"Boko Haram attacked a military post located at the Ldaoutsas locality towards the border with Nigeria this (Tuesday) morning,” said the military person stationed in the area of the attack on condition of anonymity "The military post retaliated. An assailant was shot but others managed to escape," he added. According to him, a civilian was injured in the gunfire exchange between Islamists and soldiers who "recovered a weapon".

This attack occurred after the bloody suicide bombing that struck Fotokol, the border town with Nigeria, which killed at least 11 people on Sunday.

After this attack, the authorities of the far North region prohibited the wearing of full veil in the area, which allows attackers to conceal explosives on Tuesday.

The Governor of the region, Midjiyawa Bakari, quoted by the Cameroonian daily on Tuesday, the “prohibitions of the wearing of veils’ are among the measures that will be taken to help secure the region.

"There will be strengthening of security", he said. He cited "the systematic control of vehicles, including luggage, the prohibition of movement of motorcycles in the night, the prohibition of movement of vehicles with tinted windows and the ban on the wearing of veils".

The Governor also called on people to report "suspicious persons", as well as "dubious and suspicious behaviour".

The region of the far North is regularly the target of attacks of Boko Haram which recently attacked Chad and Niger who are assisted by Cameroon in the fight against the Islamists.

After a double suicide attempt in N'Djamena reported 38 dead in mid-June, the Government of Chad has banned the wearing of the full veil throughout its territory.
